Wildcats Try to Extent Winning Run Against Panthers

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The road success will determine the Wildcats season fate starting Saturday afternoon. Fort Valley State will try to extent its five-game winning run when it treks north to battle Clark Atlanta in a key Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East Division matchup.
 
The Wildcats (5-2/3-0 SIAC East) begins its final regular season stretch with two road and one neutral site divisional clashes. The first away trip starts with the Saturday afternoon kick-off at 1 p.m. versus the Panthers (0-7/0-3 SIAC East).

Game Summary: The Wildcats' Jeremy McCants plunged in from five yards out with 5:16 in the 2Q to pull within 14-13. The Panthers increased its slim lead with a game-deciding 45-yard scoring jaunt in the early 4Q (13:38) to make it 21-13. Garrel Quainton completed a 38-yard TD pass brought the score to 21-19 with 5:34 left. The FVSU two-point conversion failed in the attempt to tie the contest. CAU took over with 5:27 left and was able to run out the clock. 
 
GENERAL NOTES
  • Teams have opposite streaks going -- FVSU has won its last 5 games with a 37-21 win over Morehouse College – Clark Atlanta lost its seventh in a row with a 22-15 overtime home loss to Savannah State
  • FVSU has won 6 of the last 7 meetings with CAU taking last year's contest
  • FVSU won the last 3 games of the series played in Atlanta with last loss at Panther Stadium being Sept. 17, 2011 in a 16-11 loss

Wildcats:

  • A win gives the team its first 6-game win season since going 6-4 in 2014

  • In the wet conditions last week vs Morehouse, posted lowest total offense of 284 yards since in the 5-game win streak
  • 2,142 yards total offense in last 5 games or 428.4 average
  • Scored most points in over a decade of 77 points last week at Central State (10/12), 2nd time to have 50+ points (50 pts. Vs. Benedict)
  • Scored 33+ points in each of the 5-game win streak where averaged 45.4 points
  • QB Slade Jarman, 3-time SIAC Offensive Player of the Week (9/28 thru 10/12) – had a down game for him with 20 of 38 for 250 yards and 2 TDs with an INT last week
  • Jarman set his new best of 1,879 yards and 17 TD passes to surpass his 2017 season total – he finished 2017 at 1,678 yards and 14 TDs.
  • Jarman ranks in top 15 in NCAA Division II in 7 different categories, including 5th in completions/game (23.14), 9th in both points responsible for (138) and points responsible for per game (19.7).
  • 15 Wildcats have caught a pass and 7 have double-figure totals
  • Wide receiver Jeremy Mack posted his best game of the year with 4 catches for 107 yards and a 47-yd TD. He also had 2 kick returns for 33 yards for 140 all-purpose yards
  • The Wildcat receivers have 7 players with 16 or more receptions and over 180 yards  
 
Panthers Defense:
  • Average 29.7 points allowed & 387.6 yards of total offense per game
  • Gave up 30+ points three times and three other games in the 20s. Gave up no less than 16 points in any game
  • Allowed 325 yards of offense, all rushing vs. Savannah State last week
  • DBs Terrance Harris and Kenneth Morgan lead the unit with 65 and 48 total tackles
  • DLs Brente Glover and Rodney Lewis combined for 17 tackles for loss and 64 stops
 
WILDCATS DEFENSE VS. PANTHERS OFFENSE
Wildcats Defense
  • Allowed 31.1 points per game & 377.6 yards of total offense
  • Gave up only 24.6 points in last 5 weeks of wins – compared to 47.5 points in first 2 weeks
  • Unit is 4th in DII with 4 defensive TDs and 4th in team tackles for loss (9.6/gm)
  • Allowed Morehouse only 128 yards of total offense, the lowest total in over 2 years
  • Held Morehouse to 2 field goals, while unit registered 11 sacks, 18 tackles for loss, forced 3 fumbles, recovered 4 fumbles and returned one for a TD
  • DEs Jahseari Patterson & Demetrius Harris spent more time in the Morehouse backfield than the running backs. The two combined for 16 TT, 9 sacks for 57 yds, 10 tackles for loss of 61 yds, 3 FF, 2 FR with a 22-yd TD and 5 QB hurries
  • Harris & Patterson are tied for the DII national lead for forced fumbles at 0.57 per game; Harris leads nation in sacks with 1.64 per game and 4th in TFLs (2.2/gm); Patterson is 20th in both sacks (0.93/gm) and TFLs (1.7/gm)
  • LB Aaron Dore tied for team-best with 9 tackles last week to go with a sack and 3.5 TFLs; he is 2nd with 48 TT and 3rd at 9 TFLs
  • LB Majeste Hansberry has 4 double-figure tackle games and leads team with 65 TT to go with 3.5 TFLs
 
Panthers Offense
  • Average 18.1 points per game & 286.3 yards of total offense per contest
  • Have only scored more than 20 points twice (27 pts at Miles & 24 pts at Kentucky State)
  • Posted a high of 19 points at home twice (vs Albany State & Central State)
  • Recorded only 1 offensive TD last week vs. Savannah State in the 22-15 OT loss
  • Registered 188 yards of total offense (-5 rush/193 pass) vs. Savannah State
  • RBs Darius Blackmon (33 car. For 75 yds) & Martin Fleming (23 car. For 67 yds) lead the ground game
  • QB Charles Stafford has passed for 17th most yards in DII at 1,841 yds on 150 of 277 attempts for 14 TDs but 10 INTs
  • WRs Kendall Wimberly (24 for 362 and 3 TDs) and Drakar Jerry (24 for 299 yds and 2 TDs)
