Wildcats’ Bridges Selected SIAC Football Newcomer of the Week

ATLANTA, Ga. – A welcome big target in the Wildcats passing game picked up a weekly honor. Fort Valley State wide receiver Shemar Bridges was selected as the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Football Newcomer of the Week announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Tied at 27, Bridges pulled in his third catch of the drive on a back right shoulder turnaround catch from seven yards for the game-winning touchdown with 1:10 left at Clark Atlanta last Saturday. The junior wide out's scoring catch helped the Wildcats (6-2) prevail, 34-27, and claim both their sixth win in a row, but more importantly a tied atop the SIAC East Division standings at 4-0.

On the day, the Jacksonville, Fla., product pulled in eight passes for 91 yards with the one touchdown. He grabbed passes covering 17 and 23 yards on the FVSU opening drive, which produced a field goal. Bridges 19-yard catch in the second quarter preceded the Wildcats first touchdown of the day. In the game-winning, fourth-quarter drive, the 6-5 wide receiver had catches of 10 and two yards before the touchdown grab beating the Clark Atlanta defender.

For the season, Bridges leads the FVSU receiving corps with 38 pass receptions for 582 yards and four touchdowns with a 15.3-yard per catch average. The first-year Wildcat rates second in the SIAC in both receptions per game (4.8) and receiving yards per game (72.8).

Bridges and FVSU travel to battle Savannah State on Saturday evening, Nov. 2, in a clash for the top spot in the SIAC East Division. Kick-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. and the game will be televised on ESPN+.
