Wildcats Fights Entire Second Half, Falls Just Short to Bears

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wildcats again had early success, which lasted almost the entire first half. After Shaw University finished strong in the final first-half moments and opened with a pair of treys in the second 20 minutes, Fort Valley State fought all second half and fell short of regaining the lead, 89-83, in the CIAA/SIAC Challenge on Saturday afternoon.

After a pair of Shaw (3-1) treys extended its six-point halftime lead to as many as 20 points, 66-46, FVSU (1-4) started its resurgence. The Wildcats pulled to within four points, 75-71, on two Zachary Boggs free throws at 6:58, before Shawn Foxbrennen put back dunk made it a one-point game, 78-77, with 4:21 to go. The Bears, though, netted the next six points to push it back to a 7-point margin as a Gregory Holloway layup put the Wildcats as close as they would get again at 86-83 with 1:03 on the clock.

Foxbrennen hit 7 of 11 attempts for a team-high 19 points to go with three rebounds and two assists. K'Viontae Williams added 13 points, four assist and two steals. Holloway and Tristan Davis chipped in 12 points piece, while Boggs and D'Angelo Strickland each added eight tallies.

Greyson Kelley of Shaw led all scorers with 26 points, including 12 of 15 free throw attempts.

The Wildcats held small leads for most of the first half with the largest of five points, 22-17, on a Davis layup at 11:23. Tied at 37, the Bears (3-1) netted the next seven points and held a 46-40 intermission lead.

FVSU has some time off before it hosts Shorter University next Thursday night, Nov. 21, in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
