Dragons Take Advantage of Wildcats Cold Second Half to Edge Out Late Win

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – For as solid as they shot in the first half, the Wildcats were seeing a lid on their bucket in the second 20 minutes on Saturday. Lane College first lead was the last two points scored in the game and it completed the 70-68 comeback men's basketball victory over Fort Valley State.

The Wildcats had one final chance to tie or win the contest after a timeout with 12.3 seconds left. After the ball went to the backcourt, Brenton Cliette Jordan's left-corner 3-pointer was on target at the buzzer, but the ball went around the rim and fell off the other side to end a disappointing home second half.

FVSU (2-5/0-1 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East) opened the second half by extending its lead to 14 points for the first of five times in the first 4:32 of the second stanza. Lane College (3-2/1-0 SIAC West), though, hung around and chipped away as its deficit until a Tyler Henry top-of-the-key triple made it a single-point difference, 67-66, with 3:16 on the clock. After a single K'Viontae Williams free throw of two tries for the home team, Henry tied the game on a mid-range jump (2:12), before a pair of Ray White free throws 37 seconds later pushed Lane ahead at 70-68.

Williams and Shawn Foxbrennen tied for top Wildcats points with 17 apiece. Williams made 10 of 14 free throws and handed out four assists, while Foxbrennen made 7-of-12 attempts for his points and pulled down 14 boards for the double-double.

Cliette Jordan made his first five tries, but his final attempt fell off the rim of his 11-point effort to go with six rebounds. Gregory Holloway added seven points and seven caroms.

The Wildcats controlled the first 30-plus minutes with a 16-5 run leading 13-10 giving them the early 29-15 cushion. In fact, FVSU downed 15 of 25 first-half attempts (60.0%) and six of nine from long-range. The solid shooting reversed in the second half where FVSU saw only 8-of-33 shots (24.2%) from the floor and 1-for-10 from 3-point range drop.

Henry led three Dragons double-figure scorers with 16 points.

FVSU has Sunday off before it travels to face a rematch with Georgia Southwestern on Monday night, Dec. 2. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m. in Americus, Ga.
