Wildcats Clash with Golden Rams in 30th Fountain City Classic for SIAC East Title

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – Rivalries don't need added incentive, but Saturday's will have extra meaning. Fort Valley State clashes with Albany State in the 30th Fountain City Classic with the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East Division crown on the line.
 
With identical records, both the Wildcats and Golden Rams are 6-3 overall and 4-1 in the SIAC East. The 30th Fountain City Classic will be for the SIAC East regular season title and the privilege to host the following Saturday (Nov. 16) for the SIAC Championship against the winner of Tuskegee-Miles College.
 
Saturday's kick-off at Columbus' McClung Stadium will be at 2 p.m.

Series First Meeting: 1945
Overall Series: ASU leads 35-33-3
Coach Porter vs. ASU: 1-2
Last Meeting: Nov. 3, 2018 – ASU win 40-6 at Columbus
Game Summary: The Rams scored 13 first-quarter points to begin the 29th Fountain City Classic. Garrel Quainton found Mekall Yancie from 15 yards out to cut the margin to 13-6 with 7:40 before halftime. It was all ASU in the final 22:40 with the final 27 points for the 40-6 win.
 
GENERAL NOTES
  • Both teams' lone SIAC East loss came at Savannah State – FVSU last Saturday (53-24) and ASU the prior week (Oct. 26) 35-19.
  • Albany State has won 5 of the last 7 FCC games
  • FVSU last win of 21-17 came in the 2016 edition – Rams led 17-0 at half only to see the Wildcats scored 3 second-half touchdowns for the win
  • FVSU other win in last 7 meetings was a 38-20 final in 2012
  • Both teams are 6-1 since week 3
Wildcats:
  • FVSU saw its longest win streak in at least 12 years end last week
  • 6 wins marks the most in a season in Coach Porter's 4 years at the helm
  • 6 victories also most wins in a season since going since going 6-4 in 2014
  • One win and be most since going 8-4 in the 2012 campaign
  • Posted most points in over a decade with 77-34 win at Central State on Oct. 12
  • All 3 losses team has not scored more than 24 points and allowed no less than 38 points in each defeat

  • Trailed Morehouse College, 9-7, at half, but scored a TD in 3Q and 4Q for a 21-9 lead of the 21-15 win

  • Pass offense is ranked 8th best in NCAA DII (313.9 yds/gm)
  • Recorded lowest total offense amount of 295 yards since being in the Tropical Storm weekend on Oct. 19 vs. Morehouse (284 yards)
  • Scored most points in over a decade of 77 points at Central State (10/12), 2nd time to have 50+ points (50 pts. Vs. Benedict)
  • QB Demontay Jones threw for 292 yards (20 of 37) and 3 TDs with 2 INTs in his first start
  • 15 Wildcats have caught a pass and 7 have pulled in 18 or more passes
  • WR Shemar Bridges (45 for 711) needs 17 yards to surpass Lorenzo Smothers 727 yards receiving high for last year…he is also 2nd in SIAC for receptions per game (4.8/gm) and receiving yards per game (72.8 yds/gm)
  • WR QA Walker is right behind Bridges with 36 catches for 514 yards and 5 TDs. He is 3rd in SIAC receptions per game (4.3) and 4th in receiving yards (66.3)
 
Golden Rams Defense:
  • Average 17.8 points allowed & 262.4 yards of total offense per game
  • In 6 wins, held opponents to 24 points or less in each
  • For 3 losses, gave up 38, 24 and 35 points
  • Held Morehouse to 219 yards of total offense
  • DBs Tyler Scott and Coemba Jones leads unit with 44 and 38 total tackles and 2 interceptions apiece
  • DL Deonte Jackson tops in tackles for loss of 8 and 2.5 sacks

Wildcats Defense
  • Allowed 33.1 points per game & 371.3 yards of total offense
  • Gave up only 25.0 points in 6 weeks of wins – compared to 49.3 points in 3 losses
  • Held 2nd opponent to under 250 yards of total offense – Morehouse (10/19) at 128 yards and Clark Atlanta (10/26) at 249 yards
  • Did not have a sack at Savannah State for the first time in 6 weeks
  • Recorded at least 10 team tackles for loss in five of the last six week with 7 in the other one
  • Defense ranks 2nd in NCAA DII in tackles for loss per game at 9.90 and 7th in sacks (3.56 per game)
  • DE Harris leads all of NCAA DII in forced fumbles (0.67/gm) and sacks per game and total sacks (1.50/gm and 13.5 sacks); 2nd in tackles for loss (2.10gm & 19.0 for the year)
  • DE Jahseari Patterson also among tops in nation in forced fumbles (6th at 0.44/gm); 24th in TFLs (1.6/gm or 14.0 on year)
  • DE Antonio Golden had his best game of the year with 7 tackles and 4.5 TFLs last week; 10.5 TFL and 3.5 sacks on year
  • DB Aaron Dore sits with 54 TT and 9 TFL
  • LB Majeste Hansberry has 5 double-figure tackle games; leads team with 82 TT to go with 6.0 TFL
  • DB Michael Hicks, Jr. tops team with 3 INTs
 
Golden Rams Offense
  • Average 22.3 points per game & 317.3 yards of total offense per contest
  • Rushing offense is 3rd in SIAC at 225.3 yards per game
  • RB duo of McKinley Habersham and Tracy Scott have combined for 1,304 yards on 204 carries with 12 TDs: Habersham at 124 for 702 and 6 TDs – Scott 80 for 602 and 6 TDs
  • QB Kelias Williams completed 10 of 24 attempts for 145 yards and 2 TDs last week; for year, 35 of 65 for 446 yards and 5 TD/2 INT
  • WR Rashad Jones and Michael Green lead with 11 for 259 and 17 for 227 yards
