Wildcats Men’s Basketball Set for More in 2019-20 Season

11/7/2019 3:43:00 PM

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – Year Two for Head Coach Mark Sherrill's Wildcats will be one of the team's season motto of "We ARE 1." Fort Valley State is set for more in this year's 2019-20 men's basketball season.

Coach Sherrill laid the first level of foundation in his late-starting opening campaign a year ago. Despite a tough 7-22 final record, FVSU is determined to make a higher mark in the win column with the returning veteran players and a good mix of transfers and first-year talent up-and-down the roster.

Leading the way, Preseason All-Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Shawn Foxbrennen (Miami, Fla.) is the top producer among the returning six Wildcats seniors and seven overall back in the fold to lead the team in Sherrill's direction of promoting the team first concept of the year motto of "We ARE 1."

Following a premiere exhibition contest in Cameron Indoor Stadium against Duke University back on Oct. 30, Foxbrennen and the FVSU team tips off the regular season this weekend, Nov. 8-9, at the Gulf South Conference/Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Challenge in Valdosta, Ga. The Wildcats are slated to battle the host Blazers Friday night in a 7 p.m. tip, before they face the Argonauts of West Florida on Saturday (6 p.m.).

In his first year playing for The Valley, Foxbrennen pumped in 13.1 points per game (367 points), second on the team, and led the Wildcats in rebounding at 6.8 per night (190 rebounds). He knocked down a solid 48.1-percent of his field goal attempts (138 of 287) and a team-best 43.4-percent of from long range (36 of 83). The Florida native hit a season-high at Valdosta State of 32 points and almost led FVSU to a road upset. He also finished the year with a 22-point outing against Tuskegee in the SIAC Tournament First Round. Shawn recorded five double-doubles and a season-high 15-rebound afternoon versus Lane College.

The 6-7 Foxbrennen will be joined again on the forward front by seniors Brenton Cliette Jordan (Macon, Ga.), D'Angelo Strickland (Lithonia, Ga.) and Levi Griffin (New Orleans, La.). The under-sized inside player, Jordan provided consistent production of 5.9 points and 6.5 caroms per evening over 25 minutes of action per game. He led FVSU in field goal percentage at 49.3-percent (66 of 134) and posted three double-doubles, including 14 points and 16 rebounds at Columbus State and 14 points and 11 boards at Benedict College.

The versatile Strickland started his 2019-20 campaign with a team-best 10 points and three blocked shots at Duke. The 6-7 forward contributed 154 points (5.3 ppg), 115 rebounds (4.0 rpg) and 22 blocked shots last season. Like Foxbrennen, Strickland had his highest-point contest at Valdosta State of 18 points and eight rebounds. He had two other double-digit outings, including 14 points at Miles.

The solid 6-6 center, Griffin, will provide good depth again this season. The senior netted 26 points and pulled down 24 points over 24 games as a junior.

Joining the inside options, FVSU will have two transfers in sophomore swingman Gregory Holloway (Macon, Ga./Mississippi Valley State) and junior Ebon Jay (Roxboro, N.C./Northwest Kansas Tech) to go with true freshman Jacobi Coleman (Kathleen, Ga.) in the mix.

Turning to the backcourt, senior K'Viontae Williams (Marion, Ala.) returns as the second double figure average player back at 11.8 points a year ago. Moving back to the wing after playing a good amount of point guard last year, the 6-4 senior hit for 19-plus points six times with a season-high of 23 points against both Georgia Southwestern and at Tuskegee. The Alabama product made over 46-percent of his floor attempts (126 of 273) and 23 of 67 (.343) from 3-point range. Williams also led the Wildcats with 80 assists (2.8 apg) and 51 steals (1.8 spg) to go with 4.6 rebounds per night.

Senior Thomas Hardy (Gaffney, S.C.) and sophomore Andrew Ziegler (Charlotte, N.C.) completes the returning guards. Hardy recorded 160 points (5.2 ppg) with a season-high 19-point effort at Spring Hill College and made a rate of 47.6-percent of his shots (60 of 126).

Ziegler, who joined the club last January, provided relief at the point and shooting guard spots in last year's lineup. The strong guard chipped in 3.6 points and 3.2 rebounds over 13 minutes per game.

Coach Sherrill bolstered his backcourt ranks both via the scholastic ranks and transfer route. The second-year FVSU director welcomed a trio of point guards in freshmen Tristan Davis (Raleigh, N.C.), Mark Sherrill, Jr. (Charlotte, N.C.) and Kenneth Franklin (Los Angeles, Calif.) to run the offense and fill a glaring need to the lineup.

Sherrill's final three pieces of the FVSU puzzle are transfers Zachary Boggs (Sanford, N.C.), who averaged over 15 points at Fayetteville Tech CC last year, and Malik Clark (Charlotte, N.C./Winston-Salem State) along with first-year player Aidan Wright (Ypsilanti, Mich.).

After putting the foundation in place for year one, Sherrill and his second Wildcats edition have their sights set on not only building the first floor of their SIAC Championship goal, but are ready to go above-and-beyond to the NCAA Division II South Regional field in the program's ascension up the winning ranks.
