No. 12 Valdosta State Powers Past FVSU Men’s Basketball in Season Opener

VALDOSTA, Ga. – An encouraging opening minute turned sour for the Wildcats. After taking the lead 45 seconds into the night, Fort Valley State saw No. 12 Valdosta State net the next 16 points and power its way to a 109-81 season-opening men's basketball game Friday night.
 
A pair of Tristan Davis free throws edged FVSU (0-1) ahead 4-2. The Blazers showed their might by getting hot over the next four minutes with 16-straight points for an 18-4 advantage. Gregory Holloway's 3-pointer with 1:43 left in the first half made it a nine-point difference, 50-41, but the visitors drew no closer. Once Valdosta State put 21 of the first 25 second-half points on the scoreboard, the home run ended any FVSU comeback hopes.
 
Shawn Foxbrennen led the Wildcats with 20 points on 7 of 12 from the floor. Davis added a 13-point, seven-rebound and two-assist effort. Zachary Boggs down a trio of 3-pointers as part of his 16 points on the night.
 
D'Angelo Strickland and K'Viontae Williams chipped in nine and eight tallies.
 
Valdosta State put seven players in double figures. The Blazers made 51.5% from the field and dropped in 16 more made free throws than the Wildcats.
 
FVSU wraps up its Gulf South Conference/Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Challenge weekend in a 6 p.m. Saturday evening contest against West Florida.
