Davis Key Five Points Help Wildcats Seal Victory Over Argonauts

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Freshman point guard Tristan Davis waited 30 minutes and 18 seconds for his first points Saturday night, but the Wildcats needed each of them. Davis downed a 3-pointer with 42 seconds and added a pair of free throws 31 ticks later as Fort Valley State sealed a 63-58 men's basketball victory where it never trailed West Florida.

The Wildcats (1-1) surged out to a 10-0 lead in the opening 3:51 capped by a D'Angelo Strickland triple. Brenton Cliette Jordan made it a 13-2 start with his own trey, before K'Viontae Williams fast break dunk gave FVSU its biggest first-half lead of 15 points, 28-13, with 4:24 on the clock. West Florida (0-2) rallied to tie the game, 54-54, with 3:43 remaining. A Williams jump shot (2:48) and a Shawn Foxbrennen 3-pointer with 2:06 to go made it 58-55, before Davis provided the final five points.

Williams hit 7 of 16 from the floor for his game-high 16-point and 6-rebound night. Cliette Jordan was a perfect 6 of 6, including 2 for 2 from 3-point land, for 15 points.

Zachary Boggs and Strickland chipped in nine and eight Wildcats points. Davis and Foxbrennen contributed five points apiece with seven of the 10 coming in the final two minutes.

The Wildcats committed only seven turnovers and held the Argonauts to under 29-percent from the floor (15 of 52).

Daniel Sofield of West Florida led all scorers with 21 points.

FVSU opens its home slate with a Tuesday night, Nov. 12, contest against Georgia Southwestern. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
