Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Hot-Shooting Magicians Overtake Wildcats

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – It's hard to beat most collegiate men's basketball teams shooting over 64-percent in a half. LeMoyne-Owen College used its hot second-half shooting to spur a 15-2 run with under nine minutes to surge past host Fort Valley State, 78-62, in men's basketball Thursday.

After a pair of Brenton Cliette Jordan free throws, FVSU (3-9/1-3 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East) would enjoy its final lead, 52-51, with 9:41. The Magicians (6-3/3-1 SIAC West) netted the next eight points and 15 of the following 17 tallies for a 66-54 score only 4:19 later as Tyrone Banks dropped seven of his game-best 31 points within the run, including one of his six triples.

Shawn Foxbrennen and Gregory Holloway hit for 14 points apiece to lead the Wildcats with seven and nine rebounds. K'Viontae Williams added 10 points and seven boards, while Cliette Jordan had eight points. Kenneth Franklin contributed a season-high seven points and two assists and D'Angelo Strickland had six points.

Banks dropped 9-of-16 tries from the field and 6-of-11 from long-range for his 31-point effort to go with seven rebounds and four assists. Kenneth Perkins was the Magicians other double-figure scorer with 17 points.

As a team, the Magicians connected on 16-of-25 shots and 6-of-12 from 3-point range in the second half. FVSU saw only one of its nine 3-point attempts go through the twine in the second half in contrast.

LeMoyne-Owen led the entire first half until a Holloway layup with 26 seconds and then a Zachary Boggs 3-pointer from a Holloway pass beat the buzzer for a 33-33 tie game at intermission.

FVSU took its first lead on a Foxbrennen foul line jump shot in the first minute of the second half, 37-36. The Wildcats would enjoy leads of as much as three points for the majority of the opening 9:18 of the second 20 minutes until the Magicians run.

FVSU wraps up its 2019 part of the schedule with a Saturday, Dec. 21, road game at Embry-Riddle in a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
