Wildcats Break out the Bats in Sunday Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ACWORTH, Ga. – The Wildcats top-notch opening day competition proved to be fruitful for Sunday success. Fort Valley State softball saw Jenelle Cockerham's run-scoring single cap a three-run home seventh to defeat Virginia Union, 14-13, before it powered five home runs in a 14-6 run-rule victory over Bowie State.

After going in front 11-9 in the sixth, the Wildcats (2-2) had to rally again once the Panthers plated four in the visitors' seventh for a 13-11 lead. A Katrina Loney sac fly and Ladayshia Williams single tied the contest, before a pinch hit Cockerham hit to right field allowed Williams to rush home for the walk-off FVSU victory.

Against Bowie State trailing 6-3, FVSU used two three-run homers from Kayla Brown and Shakerra Geter and a solo shot by Jahara Buggs for an eight-run third. The Wildcats added three run scores in the fifth, including a Brown single to give the team the run-rule final.

The Wildcats plated 28 runs off 37 hits over 12 innings. Brown covered 4.1 innings for the mound win in game two, while she hit 5 for 8 with a double, a 3-run homer and four RBI. Geter continued her torrid early season with a 5 for 6 day – a pair of double, the 3-run home run and three runs.

Loney added a 4 of 7 day with a double and home run. Williams lined 5 hits in 9 at bats with a double. Audrianna Noel contributed a perfect 4 for 4 day with a home run and two RBI. Sara Lann had a double of two hits, Ashley Simmons-Blair sliced four hits with a double and Marlayzah Crutchfield lined three hits and swiped a base from the leadoff spot. Buggs finished the multi-hit attack with a 2 for 3 day against Bowie State with the home run, two RBI and a stolen Base.

FVSU opens its home schedule this Thursday afternoon, Feb. 14, in a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Montreat College.
