FVSU Uses Early Run and Pulls Away in Second Half over Tigers

COLUMBIA, S.C. – For the first time this season, the Wildcats have swept a season series. Fort Valley State used an early run and then pulled away with a second mid-second half run for the men's basketball win, 90-73, over Benedict College.
 
The Wildcats (7-20/6-9 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) saw Jaylon McMillan started a 10-0 run three minutes into the game and finished it with a trey almost three minutes later for a 17-9 lead. The Tigers (4-20/3-12 SIAC) cut the difference to 12 points three times in the first eight minutes of the second half, before the visitors scored 16 of the next 20 points for a 78-54 advantage with 5:40 to go and coasted home.
 
McMillan pumped in 5 of 10 treys and 9 of 15 from the floor for a FVSU and
game-best 27 points and handed out four helpers.
 
The Wildcats had three others in double digits. K'Viontae Williams dropped in 17 points to go with five rebounds and two assists. Forwards Brenton
Cliette Jordan and Shawn Foxbrennen both registered double-doubles for the first Wildcat pair to do so in a single game this season. Cliette Jordan netted 14 points and grabbed 11 boards. Foxbrennen made 4 of 5 shots and all three of his 3-pointers for 12 points to go with 12 defensive rebounds and four assists.
 
DeShawn Graham produced 20 points for Benedict College.
 
The Wildcats crashed the glass to a tune of 44-26 and shot 58.6-percent from the field (17 of 29) in the first half where they also made 6 of 12 from 3-point range to establish the lead.
 
FVSU completes its regular season this Saturday night, Feb. 16, when it faces rival Albany State on the road starting at 8 p.m.
