Wildcats Tough First Frame, Silent Bats Spell Trouble in Home Opener

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats' Sunday hitting outburst did not make the trip home for Thursday afternoon's home opener. Montreat College scored four two-out runs in the day's first at bat and the Fort Valley State softball bats were silent as the visitors won the twinbill, 5-1 and 7-0.

With two outs in the top of the first in game one, the Cavaliers (5-5) saw back-to-back hits drive in three runs and two batters later a bases loaded walk for a 4-0 lead. The Wildcats (2-4) could push only Tyanna Askew home on a Shakerra Geter single in the third, but they stranded two on base and six for the game.

FVSU's Sara Lann doubled to lead off game two's second inning, but three-straight outs ended its threat, while Montreat plated the first pair of four scoring trips to the plate in the top of the third. FVSU failed to knock in Alera Buie, who reached on a bunt single, from third base in the third.

Ashley Simmons and Geter
were the lone multi-hit Wildcats of their eight hits. Lann had the only extra base hit with the game two double. Askew, Buie and Ladayshia Williams had the other singles.

FVSU will now be off until it
travels to Macon next Wednesday, Feb. 20, in a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Wesleyan University.
