FVSU Final Two Possessions Come up Empty, Edged at Paine

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Wildcats led the majority of the afternoon, but its last lead was not long enough. After a Paine College 3-pointer put the home team in front, Fort Valley State's final two possessions came up empty in the final 21 seconds and lost a tough, 55-53, decision.

Shawn Foxbrennen hit a jump shot to push the Wildcats  (6-20/5-9 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) back in front, 53-52, with 1:17 left in a back-and-forth second half. The home Lions' (6-15/5-9 SIAC) Charles Moore drained what would be the game-winning trey with 43 seconds on the clock. FVSU committed a turnover and missed a 3-pointer in those last 21 ticks on the clock.

Jaylon McMillan paced the Wildcats with 23 points on 7 of 16 from the floor and 4 of 9 from long-range. Brenton
Cliette Jordan downed all three of his field goals and a pair of foul shots for eight points to go with four rebounds. Foxbrennen chipped in seven tallies and five boards.

Along with the game-deciding shot, Moore led Paine College with 18 points.

Tied at 8, Foxbrennen and McMillan made back-to-back treys and McMillan added a foul shot for a 15-8 lead with 8:15 left in the first half. The Lions cut the difference to four, 24-20, by intermission.

Starting the second half, McMillan drained two 3-pointers in the first 1:39 to give FVSU what would be its largest lead of the day, 30-22.

Paine rushed back and edged ahead, 36-34, at the 12:36 mark and held a four-point lead, 40-36.

Cliette Jodan made both of his foul shot attempts for a FVSU 51-50 lead at 2:47, before Paine answered the first of two times in the last 1:40 of the day.

FVSU treks to Benedict College on Monday night, Feb. 11, in an 8 p.m.
contest.
