Geter Belts Home Run, Wildcats Fall to Top Competition

2/9/2019 10:29:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ACWORTH, Ga. – The Wildcats opened the 2019 season against two of the best teams they will face all year. Shakerra Geter belted a solo home run, but Fort Valley State fell to NCAA Division I Grambling State, 7-1, and Claflin, 10-0, in five innings.

The early season Wildcats (0-2) offense was unable to take advantage of opportunities as they left 10 runners on base, while Geter blasted a fifth-inning solo home run for the lone run against the DI Tigers (1-0).

Claflin (2-0) started fast with four first-inning runs and it's right fielder threw
out the final out of the game at home plate.

Sarah Lann was the lone Wildcats multi-hit player
in the day. The freshman had two singles and a walk against Grambling.

Geter's home run and Katrina Loney and Marlayzha Crutchfield added hits in the first game. Tanami Owens, Alera Buie and Ladayshia Williams accounted for the three FVSU hits against Claflin.

Vs. Grambling State

In the top of the third trailing 2-0, FVSU put two runners on base after Aliyah Speight was hit by a pitch and Crutchfield singled. The pair moved to second and third bases on a sacrifice, but a fly out ended the frame.

Lann singled to start the fourth, while Loney was hit by a pitch and Williams walked to load the bases with no out, before the Grambling State pitcher fanned the next three hitters.

Vs. Claflin

In the top of the fifth, Buie and Williams singled to start the FVSU at bat. The Wildcats had runners on the corners with one out after a force out.
Jahara Buggs' line drive to right field ended with Buie being caught just in time to end the game at home.

FVSU completes its opening weekend four games on Sunday morning, Feb. 10, against Virginia Union (8 a.m.) and Bowie State (10:30 a.m.)
