Wildcats Down Bears, Badgers Score Late to Take Second Game for SIAC Crossover Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 JASPER, Ala. – After having a long time since they last played, the Wildcats played well for 11 innings on Friday. Fort Valley State used timely hitting and solid play for a 3-1 win over Miles, but Spring Hill pushed home five runs in the sixth for the 12-4 victory in the late-night contest of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Softball Crossover opening day.

Kayla Brown allowed only a single fifth-inning run, while Jahara Buggs lined an RBI double in the second and Ladayshia Williams singled home one and saw a second score on the play in the third for the Wildcats (4-10) offense.

FVSU opened a 3-0 lead in the night game against Spring Hill via Aliyah Speight and Brown RBI hits. Following the Badgers answering with three scores of their own in the home second, Janelle Cockerham drove home Shakerra Geter, who led off with a single, for a 4-3 lead after 2.5 innings. Spring Hill added two runs in the third and fifth, before it ended the contest with five in the fifth for the eight-run rule. FVSU was only able to record one hit in its final three at bats.

Buggs led the Wildcats offense with a 4 for 6, including a 3 for 3 game with a double against Miles. Cockerham doubled in the first game and singled in the second one.

Williams, Brown, Geter and Speight rounded out the FVSU hits on the day.

Against Miles, Brown had her first collegiate complete game where she scattered eight hits and one earned run without a walk.

FVSU continues with day two of the SIAC Crossover on Saturday with an 11 a.m. against Lane College and an afternoon affair at 3:30 p.m. versus Tuskegee.
