Brown Pitching and Trio of FVSU Sixth-Frame Runs Earns Sunday Split

JASPER, Ala. – The Wildcats finish the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Softball Crossover on a good note. Behind a one-hit and 10-strikeout Kayla Brown performance, Fort Valley State pushed past Lemoyne-Owen, 4-1, after Kentucky State claimed Sunday's first game, 8-0 in five innings.

Brown, who was named to the SIAC All-Tournament Team, allowed only a lead-off double
in the top of the fourth, which the Magicians' hitter came around to score for a 1-0 lead two batters later. After Ladayshia Williams reached on an error to start the home fifth, Alera Buie laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring the runner home to tie the contest, 1-1. Ashley Simmons-Blair laced a lead-off double in the sixth and was joined by Jahara Buggs, who was hit by a pitch, on a Sara Lann single to take the lead. Jenelle Cockerham added a run-scoring single, before Brown kept Lemoyne-Owen off the scoreboard in the seventh.

Simmons-Blair lined a one-out single in the top of the first, which was FVSU's lone hit against Kentucky State. The Thorobreds plated three in the first, two in the second and ended the run-rule contest with three more fifth-inning runs.
