Wildcats Offense Comes Alive in Game Two for Saturday Softball Split

3/23/2019 11:57:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ATLANTA, Ga. – A completely different Wildcats team took the field in game two. Fort Valley State's offense came alive for a dozen runs in a 12-2 late-game win, after Clark Atlanta took the first softball contest, 9-0, in two five-run games Saturday afternoon.

FVSU (6-14/3-5 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) put runners in scoring positions in each of the second, third and fourth frames, but could not push across a game-one run. The Wildcats did not have that problem in the late game. The visitors plated five runners in the second, before it added two, three and two in the next three innings to race past the Panthers (9-9/5-2 SIAC).

Freshmen Tanami Owens, Jahara Buggs and Sara Lann paced the Wildcats offensive attack with a combined 9 for 16
day and five RBI. Owens lined a bases-clearing triple in game two as part of her three hits, while Buggs had three singles, a run and an RBI. Lann laced a RBI double in game two.

Shakerra Geter added her own three-hit day, which included a two-run triple. Janelle Cockerham singled in each contest, while Tyanna Askew went 2 for 3 with two runs in the late game. Ashley Simmons-Blair drew a bases loaded walk and had a two-run single for game two.

In the circle, Kayla Brown won her fifth game as she improved to 5-2 on the year. The freshman gave up two runs, one earned, four hits and fanned five batters.

The two teams complete their three-game series on Sunday afternoon, March 24, in a 1 p.m. first pitch.

Game 1
Off three runs and two hits, Clark Atlanta took a 3-0 first-inning lead. After FVSU left two runners on base in the top of the second, the Panthers added five unearned runs off two Wildcats errors to open an 8-0 lead.

The Wildcats left two more runners on base in both the fourth and fifth innings, while the Panthers added one fourth-frame run.

Game 2
Trailing 1-0, Simmons-Blair drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game, 1-1. Owens cleared the bases as she belted a three-run double. Owens scored when Buggs followed with a single for a 5-1 lead.

In the top of the third and two outs, Simmons-Blair hit a two-run single. Buggs doubled and Geter tripled in the fourth as part of three more scores, before the visitors made it 12 runs with a pair in the fifth.
