Big Innings Spell Trouble for Wildcats Against Tigers

COLUMBIA, S.C. – After not playing for almost two calendar weeks, the Wildcats defense had a tough day. Benedict College took advantage of eight Fort Valley State errors resulting in nine unearned runs to take both ends of a 14-6 and 10-2 contests in five and six frames on the Monday softball diamond.

The Wildcats (11-17/7-7 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) burst on the second-inning, game-one scene. FVSU plated six runs, which were capped by a two-run Kayla Brown double. The big lead did not last as the Tigers (18-17/11-6 SIAC) answered with five in the third, before they added three in the fourth and a six-score fifth to end the contest.

Benedict scored two unearned runs in the home first of the late game. With the first on a wild pitch, Ashley Simmons-Blair drove home the game-tying score, 2-2, with a single through the left side. The home squad pushed ahead in the third with five unearned scores, before another tally in the fifth and a pair in the sixth of the 10-2 final.

Simmons-Blair accounted for three of the Wildcats' 10-
hit attack in seven at bats. Jahara Buggs doubled and singled with a stolen base and a run. Keteria Loney lined her own game-two double with a run and one RBI. Brown doubled in two runs of the opener.

Ladayshia Williams added the third multi-hit player with a single in each game and run. Shakerra Geter completed the hits with a single.

FVSU completes the three-game SIAC set with a single game on Tuesday, April 16, game at Benedict with a 1 p.m.
first pitch.
