FVSU Softball Late Comeback Falls Short in Benedict Finale

COLUMBIA, S.C. – After falling into a six-run hole in the first three innings, the Fort Valley State softball team's late comeback attempt fell short in the finale at Benedict College, 6-4, on Tuesday afternoon.

Following a pair of Tigers runs in the first at bat, the home team added four more in the third for a 6-0 lead. A Marlayzha Crutchfield lead-off walk and back-to-back singles from Ashley Simmons-Blair and Jahara Buggs started the Wildcats (13-18/7-8 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) scoring.
Keteria Loney lined a two-run single and Janelle Cockerham added a RBI ground out to make it 6-4. Benedict, though, retired FVSU in order in the seventh to end the visiting rally attempt.

Loney led the Wildcat hitters with a 2-for-3 game with 2 RBI. Simmons-Blair, Buggs and Sara Lann had the other singles.

Other than a first batter home run, Lann was solid in relief where she allowed only three hits and one earned run over 3.2 innings of work.

FVSU begins its three-game SIAC series on Friday, April 19, at Albany State in a single contest at 5 p.m. Games two and three begin on Saturday at 3 p.m.
