Golden Rams Edge Past Wildcats Softball in Twinbill

ALBANY, Ga. – In a pair of tight games, the Wildcats saw the home team finish strong for the wins. Fort Valley State battled back in the opener and were scoreless through five in game two only to see Albany State plate the deciding runs in the sixth inning on both ends of an 11-3 and 2-0 softball finals.

Trailing 4-1 in the top of the fifth, Jahara Bugs belted her
second, RBI double, scoring two Wildcats (13-21/7-11 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) for a 5-3 score. The Golden Rams (16-27/13-2 SIAC) added a solo homer in the fifth before they finished the game with six in the sixth, including the last three unearned.

Scoreless through 5.5 innings, Albany State scored two runs on a pair of doubles for a 2-0 tally. A
lead-off Shakerra Geter double and Kayla Brown single started the FVSU seventh, but ASU retired the next three hitters to end the late contest.

Buggs went 3-for-3 in the second game with two doubles and three RBI. Brown was 4-for-6 on the day with a run. Geter added a double and single in game two. Keteria Loney, Ashley Simmons-Blair and Sara Lann had the other singles for the visitors.

Despite picking up the game two loss, Janelle Cockerham had a strong outing. The freshman kept the Golden Rams off the scoreboard for five innings, before she finished with a line of six hits, two earned runs, one walk and two strikeouts over the six innings.

FVSU added two home doubleheaders in its week off before the SIAC Championship Tournament. The Wildcats host the Wolves of Wesleyan College on Monday afternoon, April 22, in a twinbill starting at 3 p.m. It
also hosts Voorhees College on Friday (April 26) starting at 2 p.m.
