FOOTBALL CAMP UPDATE - Wildcats QBs Share Their Camp Competition and More

8/27/2019 3:39:00 PM

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – With the minutes ticking by until the 2019 gridiron season, the Wildcats preseason position competitions have been fierce. The Fort Valley State veteran quarterbacks of Slade Jarman, Garrel Quainton and Demontay Jones have been competing on the field, but building some fun chemistry off the practice field in their preparations.

The three Wildcats senior quarterbacks see the Tuesday (Aug. 27) as the final double-digit days until Saturday, Sept. 7, in the season-opener against defending Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion Miles College. The FVSU kick-off against Miles is set for 6 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.

Since the first day of preseason camp and all the way back to spring practice drills, Jarman, Quainton and Jones have been slinging the pigskin to battle for the starting nod in just over a week.

The three talented FVSU quarterbacks have combined to start each of the past 20 games covering all the 2017 and 2018 games. In the 10 contests a year ago, the trio completed over 53-percent of their passes (143 of 269) for 1,768 yards and nine touchdowns.

With this being the case, the two shared how the competition is, as well as, some fun facts about their fellow quarterbacks.

How has the competition been for the three of you?

Jarman – "I believe, as a group, we have great quarterbacks. We all have the same goal. We all have special talents that will help our team if called on."

Quainton – "It makes you work harder and it brings out the best player in you"

Jones – "Without great competition, I'm taking pointless reps. (The other two) coming in every day ready to compete forces me to stay consistent and come ready to play every day."

The stiff individual competition, though, has the Wildcats quarterback being of one mind and goal despite being asked the same questions separately.

"Individually, I want to win the SIAC Championship and team-wise I also want to win the SIAC Championship," stressed Jarman.

Jarman saw his 13-straight starts at quarterback end in game three last year at Miles College where he suffered a season-ending injury. Quainton and Jones split the final seven starts of 2018. With this experience, the offensive general group is confident in themselves and each other for the year.

"We have the talent of a championship team. Once we all get on the same page, we will be an unstoppable force," pointed out Jones.

The hard work and preparations for the year and getting to that Championship level continues to culminate for just over another week.

Away from the field, what is the word the three seniors say about each other…

"Garrel can really be a basketball player. I think if he took basketball as serious as he does football, he could make it in the NBA easy," explained Jones. "Slade is the best trash talker I have ever met in my life. He has a good comeback for everything."

Quainton added, "They both (Jarman and Jones) should be comedians, they're too funny."

The FVSU Quarterbacks Coach Joel Hirsch has the final word, "Garrel has the best 3-point shot on the team, while Slade thinks he has the best 3-point shot on the team. Montay is pound-for-pound the strongest on our team."

The three Wildcats aim to make their team the strongest player-for-player team in the SIAC next.
