Wildcats Ready for 3rd Annual Jake Gaither Classic Against Rattlers

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – Following a hard-fought opening night contest, the Wildcats go on the road for the first time this weekend. The Fort Valley State football team returns to Tallahassee and a rematch against Florida A&M in the 3rd Annual Jake Gaither Classic on Saturday night.
 
The Wildcats and Rattlers will both be looking for their first 2019 season victories. The Saturday kick-off is set for 6 p.m. at Bragg Memorial Stadium.

Series First Meeting: 1949
Overall Series: FAMU leads 11-1
Coach Porter vs. FAMU: 0-1
Last Meeting: Sept. 1, 2018 – FAMU win 41-7 at FAMU
Game Summary: Rattlers led 13-0 before a lightning delay. The Wildcats came out of the delay when Slade Jarman completed a 92-yard TD pass to pull his team to within 13-7 with 4:40 in the 2Q. FAMU, though, answered right away and scored the final 28 points of the game.
 
WILDCATS OFFENSE VS RATTLERS DEFENSE


     WILDCATS:
  • Totaled 268 yards in 63 plays (4.3 yds/play) in opener
  • Passed for 256 of the 268 yards
  • QB Slade Jarman connected on 27 of 44 passes for 256 yards with 2 TDs and 1 INT
  • New Receiving Corps. make marks in first Wildcats games:
  • Jamari Clark posted all 12 rushing yards on 4 carries to go with 7 rec. for 18 yds
 
     RATTLERS:
  • Defense was led by Demetrius Powell & Markquese Bell with 8 tackles apiece
  • The Unit allowed 42 first downs and 694 total yards to UCF
 
WILDCATS DEFENSE VS. RATTLERS OFFENSE
 
         WILDCATS DEFENSE
  • The first FVSU Defensive outing had its successes and tough parts a week ago
  • Wildcats allowed 360 total yards on 67 plays (5.4 yards/play) – 227 rush/265 pass
  • In his first collegiate start, LB Majeste Hansberry posted 15 tackles & a pass breakup
  • LB Aaron Dore had 8 stops and forced a fumble
  • Also in his first start, LB Noah Waller recorded 4 TT, 2.0 TFLs and 1.5 sacks
  • Back after a year away, DE Demetrius Harris contributed 4 TT and 1.5 sacks
  • Moving from offense to defense in 2019, Mekall Yancie finished with 1.5 TFLs of his 2 stops
 
        RATTLERS OFFENSE
  • FAMU mustered only 96 total yards vs. #17 Central Florida
  • Xavier Smith carried 1 time for 10 yds for all the ground yards & added 5 rec. for 10 yds receiving
  • QB Ryan Stanley completed 7 of 24 passes for 52 yards
  • David Mingo led the receivers with 2 rec. for 26 yds.
 
 
SPECIAL TEAMS
 
        WILDCATS
  • In his first collegiate field goal attempt, K/P Eli Mashburn belted a 45-yarder in his only attempt
  • Mashburn also placed 3 of his 6 punt attempts inside the 20-yardline
 
     RATTLERS
  • Punter Chris Faddoul had a top day with 11 punts and a 48.5-yard average with 4 inside the 20-yardline
