Wildcats Battle Tigers in Upstate HBCU Classic

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – After three opening non-conference clashes in the books, the Wildcats turn to Southern Intercollegiate Conference Eastern Division opener this weekend. Fort Valley State battles Benedict College in the renewed Upstate HBCU Classic in Greenville, S.C. on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Wildcats (1-2/0-0 SIAC East) and Tigers (0-3/0-1 SIAC East) will both be looking to for first SIAC East victories and FVSU's first East game. The Saturday, Sept. 28, kick-off is set for 4 p.m. at Sirrine Stadium.

Game Summary: After an 11-yard fumble return for a touchdown, FVSU held a 20-14 advantage after three quarters. The Tigers rallied and found the end zone twice in the final frame for the 28-20 win.

  • Playing in 2nd neutral site game in a row, at Augusta last week vs. Savannah State
  • Fell in close 21-14 decision to Savannah State last week
            Scored TD with 1:02 left to make it 21-14 and had ball one last time with 33 seconds from own 2-yard line but only moved the ball 12 yards before time expired.
 
 
WILDCATS OFFENSE VS HAWKS` DEFENSE

Wildcats Offense:
  • Average 22.3 points & 257.7 yards of total offense
  • Totaled season-high 336 yards on 60 plays (5.6 yds/play) last week vs Shorter
  • Passed for 297 yards/Rushed for 39 yards
  • QB Slade Jarman had best day of season with 297 yds passing on 25 of 38 with 2 TDs and led team with 47 rushing yards & a 3-yd TD run
  • QA Walker had his 3rd 5-plus catch day with 6 rec. for 96 yds and a 29-yd TD
  • Shemar Bridges topped the FVSU WRs last wk with 122 yds on 7 rec
  • Joseph Ross added 6 rec. for 31 yds
 
Tigers Defense:
  • Average 30.0 points allowed & 238.7 yards of total offense per game
  • Gave up only 223 yards of offense vs. Savannah State
  • FS Rob Cummings led defense with 8 TT last week & 2nd on team at 18 TT & 2.5 TFL on year
  • LB Amari Andrews tops unit with 22 TT and 3 TFL on season
 
WILDCATS DEFENSE VS. TIGERS OFFENSE
Wildcats Defense
  • Allowed 39.3 points per game in first three weeks & 433.0 yards of total offense
  • S Mike Hicks, Jr. caught the big interception last week and returned it 56 yards to set up a 3-yd FVSU TD in the 2nd quarter. He had 6 tackles for the day
  • S Zach Anderson caused another Shorter turnover with a fumble to go with 10 TT
  • Unit has 19 tackles for loss in 3 games
  • LB Majeste Hansberry has led in tackles all 3 games with his 3rd 9+ tackle game of 13 vs. Shorter and has 37  for the year
  • LB Aaron Dore had his best outing of 12 TT and 2.5 TFL last week. He is 2nd on team with 28 stops & 3.5 TFL
 
Tigers Offense
  • Average 22.0 points per game & 200.0 yards of total offense per contest
  • QB Phillip Brown tops team in rushing (43 for 124, 2 TD) and has completed 39 of 74 passes for 398 yds with 4 TD/5 INT
  • WR Raylen Elzy paces the WRs with 7 rec. for 114 yds
  • RB Dylan Bloodsaw also has 7 rec. for 68 yds and a TD
 
SPECIAL TEAMS
Wildcats
  • K/P Eli Mashburn made it 2 for 2 on FG tries this year with a 33-yd boot vs. Shorter. He also had a 45-yd kick vs. Miles.
  • Mashburn had his longest punt of the year of 51 yds. Vs. Shorter and added two more I20. He has now put 5 of his 17 attempts inside the 20 and averages 37.4 per punt
Tigers
  • P Jared Eubanks has 17 punts with 4 inside the 20 and holds a 31.9-yard average
  • Team has missed it only 2 field goal attempts
