Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Chris Myers

Wildcats Charge Falls Short in Set 5 Against Tigers

ALBANY, Ga. – In their morning match of three volleyball matches, the Wildcats furious charge fell just short against the Tigers. After falling in the opening two sets, Fort Valley State battled back with winning the third and a marathon fourth set only to see Miles College edge out the fifth set. FVSU was bested by defending Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion Spring Hill and Tuskegee in straight sets.

Following five set-point failures, the Wildcats (2-5/1-4 SIAC East) Nia Bell downed a pair of kills to tie the match at two sets apiece in the 31-29 long fourth set. Miles took the first two sets (25-12 and 25-21) before FVSU broke in at 25-19 in set three. The Wildcats held an 8-7 lead in the fifth set at the switching of sides, but the Tigers netted the next five tallies on the way to a 15-12 final.

In the two afternoon matches, Spring Hill College claimed a 25-7, 25-18 and 25-12 victory, while Tuskegee posted a 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-19) as well over FVSU.

Against Miles, Bell pounded 21 kills to go with 12 digs and a pair of aces. Ceirra Wright and India King chipped in 11 kills apiece. Ashley Simmons-Blair led the defense with 17 digs, while Rita Davis and Shantrila Mosely handed out 23 and 17 assists.

FVSU returns to the court in the early Friday morning hours with an 8 a.m. match versus Kentucky State. The team also has contests against Lane College (12 p.m.) and Central State (4 p.m.) in the second day of the SIAC Crossover in Albany, Ga.
