Golden Bears Power Past Wildcats Late

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – After the Wildcats fans rose to their feet in the final third quarter seconds from a game-tying home touchdown, the visiting Golden Bears had the answer. Defending Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion Miles College showed its fourth-quarter might with an immediate go ahead touchdown answer and a key interception on the following Fort Valley State possession on the way to a 38-17 win Saturday night.

With the ball on the visiting side of the field the entire third quarter, the Wildcats' QA Walker pulled in a five-yard pass from Slade Jarman for a 17-17 tie with 22 seconds left. Following a good kick-off return, the Golden Bears (1-0) marched 58 yards to retake the lead on a Leonard Tyree 8-yard catch. Miles picked off Jarman on the second FVSU play of the ensuing possession and turned it for a 31-17 cushion with 7:32 left in the game.

The Wildcats turned the ball over on down on the Golden Bears' 21-yardline, before the visitors punched in the final score.

Jarman threw for 256 yards on 27 of 44 attempts for two touchdowns to lead the FVSU offense. It was the five second-half Miles sacks of seven total of Jarman, though, which was key in the final 30 minutes.

Newcomer Shemar Bridges pulled in seven passes for 74 yards and two-yard, first-quarter touchdown. Walker added three receptions for 62 yards and AJ Shipman grabbed four balls for 21 yards.

The Wildcats defense allowed only 133 yards passing, but it came up empty in the turnover department. Majeste Hansberry paced FVSU with 15 tackles, while Aaron Dore had eight and a forced fumble. Noah Waller contributed four stops, two tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks in his first start. Demetrius Harris and Mekall Yancie added 1.5 sacks apiece.

Miles saw both De'Rell Freeman and Donte Edwards eclipse the century mark on the ground with 114 and 111 yards on 32 combined carries and two scores.

The first points of the night came via special teams. After three plays for seven yards, the Wildcats punt snap flew over Eli Mashburn's head, but he scooped it up inside his own five yardline only to have his kick blocked and the Golden Bears to run into the end zone.

After Bridges two-yard touchdown catch tied the game at seven, Mashburn booted a 45-yard field goal for what would be the lone FVSU lead of the night, 10-7, with 13:24 left in the first half.

Miles produced the final 10 first-half points for a 17-10 lead at intermission.

FVSU travels south to battle NCAA Division I Florida A&M next Saturday, Sept. 14, in a 6 p.m. kick-off.
