Wildcats Spoil Golden Rams Homecoming

ALBANY, Ga. – The Wildcats snapped their tough skid in a big way on Saturday night. Fort Valley State spoiled rival Albany State, 72-64, on the road men's basketball court.

Tied at 50-50 with 7:13 left, a D'Angelo Strickland fast break layup following a Malik Clark steal gave FVSU (4-15/2-8 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East) the lead for good. The Golden Rams came back to within a point, 53-52, at 5:49. But it was the visitors' night! Clark drained a trey, Jacobi Coleman hit a 15-foot jumper and Ebon Jay laid in a put back for a 60-52 advantage with 4:06.

The FVSU victory snapped its nine-game losing streak with the last five games having been decided by a combined 23 points. The difference came with no Wildcats turnovers in the final four minutes.

Shawn Foxbrennen paced FVSU with 20 points, 12 in the second half, with 12 of 13 from the foul line and 12 rebounds for a double-double. K'Viontae Williams added 16 points, including back-to-back buckets at 2:03 and 1:19 to be the shot clock. Strickland rounded out the double figure scorers with 10 tallies.

Randy McClure led ASU with 20 points on 8 of 9 attempts and 10 caroms.

Albany State went out to a 15-6 lead in the opening 10 minutes. FVSU chipped away at the margin and reversed the difference to an eight-point lead, 31-23, before it had a 33-27 lead at intermission.

FVSU has a week off before it travels to face Paine College next Saturday, Feb. 1, at 3 p.m.
