Wildcats Softball Trio Dots the SIAC Preseason Team

ATLANTA, Ga. – There is a lot of anticipation for the 2020 Wildcats season and for good reason. The Fort Valley State trio of Shakerra Geter, Jahara Buggs and Keteria Loney dot the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Preseason Team announced on Monday afternoon.
 
After making their first SIAC Tournament appearance in four years last spring, the three Wildcats (18-24) and their teammates have their sights set on a return and even more success this season.
 
FVSU joins defending SIAC champion Spring Hill College as the only other conference member to place three players on the Preseason All-SIAC First Team.
 
Both Geter and Buggs move from their 2019 All-SIAC Second Team honors to the Preseason Team, while Loney jumps into the mix following a solid last season of her own.
 
Geter returns as a Utility Player/Non-Pitcher as she saw action in all 36 games at either catcher or third base. The senior from Newnan, Ga., led the Wildcats in eight offensive categories with 34 hits (in 102 at bats for a .333 average), 18 runs, seven doubles, two triples, two home runs, 22 RBI, 51 total bases and 11 walks. Geter was second on the squad with a .333 average, a .500 slugging percentage, and a .405 on base percentage. The veteran Wildcat also committed only three errors in 141 chances for a solid .979 fielding percentage.
 
Buggs came on as the 2019 season went on during her freshman campaign. The sophomore outfielder hit safely in 18 of 27 games and finished with a .325 average (27 hits in 83 at bats). The Rockdale, Ga., product lined the second-most doubles on the team with six, while she scored 16 runs and hit a double and one home run. Buggs rounded out her first-year numbers with 14 RBI, .458 slugging percentage, seven steals in eight attempts, .398 on base percentage and five walks. Buggs also made only a single error in 25 fielding chances for a .960 percentage.
 
Like Geter, Loney (Decatur, Ga.) split time last spring between designated player, catcher and third base and makes the Preseason All-SIAC team as the Designated Player. The senior FVSU player will be a foundation piece this year after she hit .324 going 23-for-71 in 26 games last spring. The designated player scored nine times, laced four doubles, belted a pair of home runs and drove in 17 runners. Loney held a .465 slugging percentage and a .358 on base percentage.
 
FVSU's hard work will be put to the test for the first time in a 2020 season opening twinbill against Trinity Baptist on Saturday, Feb. 8, starting at 1 p.m. on Wildcat Field.
