FVSU Overcome by Kentucky State in Last Minute

FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Wildcats were having a good afternoon for the first 33 minutes on Saturday. Fort Valley State fell to Kentucky State in the final 40 seconds, 75-72, of the men's basketball contest.

The Wildcats (3-11/1-4 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East) led 70-67 after an Andrew Ziegler layup with 1:28 left. The Thorobreds (6-7/3-3 SIAC West) went to the foul line three times in the next 52 seconds and sank all six attempts for their first lead at 40 seconds (71-70), before they led 73-70 following the third pair with 20 seconds. A Shawn Foxbrennen jumper with eight ticks left pulled the team within a point, 73-72, but two more home free throws pushed it back to three points, 75-72. K'Viontae Williams' game-tying 3-pointer was no good for the FVSU heartbreaking loss.

Foxbrennen led the visitors with 20 points on 9-for-15 shooting to go with nine rebounds and two blocks. Ziegler netted 10 of his 14 points in the second half and made 7-of-8 tries on the day. Williams and D'Angelo Strickland both scored 13 points apiece.

Grant Goode paced Kentucky State with 17 points.

FVSU started the day with a 13-2 run over the opening 5:42 capped by a Williams trey. The Wildcats continued to hold the advantage, 39-27, at halftime and built it to 16 points at both 47-31 (15:57) and again at 62:46 with 9:10 showing in the second half.

The Thorobreds hit a triple at 8:15 remaining and chipped away 10 points until the final media timeout (3:49) read the margin at 66-60. The home team scored the first five points out of the timeout as the difference was one point, 66-65, with 3:01 and the Wildcats did not give up the advantage until 40 seconds left.

In the game, FVSU dropped only 3-of-16 long-range attempts, while Kentucky State made 19-of-29 free throws compared to only 3-of-4 for the visitors. The Wildcats won the rebounding, 43-26, but lost in number of turnovers, 26-14.

FVSU will have a week off before it travels to Atlanta next Saturday, January 11, in a 3 p.m. contest at Clark Atlanta.
