Goolsby and Phillips Named SIAC Softball Players of the Week

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – Two of the Wildcats weekend leaders picked up awards Tuesday. Re'Nesha Goolsby and Kayla Phillips were named the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Softball Pitcher and Player of the Week winners.

The two FVSU players helped the team post a 3-1 opening weekend with a Saturday split against Trinity Baptist and a sweep of Sewanee University on Sunday.

In her best performance of her season-plus as a Wildcat, Goolsby went 2-0 with a save while she did not give up an earned run over 14.1 innings to her credit. Phillips hit .500 in 14 at bats with five RBI and a key Sunday second-game double and five RBI.

Over three appearances, Goolsby of Macon, Ga., entered early in Saturday's first game and proceeded to shut down Trinity Baptist to a tune of one hit, a walk and three strikeouts over 5.1 innings for her first collegiate win. On Sunday, the sophomore pitcher entered the circle in the sixth leading 3-0 and did not allow a hit, walked one and fanned another for the save. Goolsby came on in the top of the first after five hitters and shut down Sewanee as she allowed only three hits and a walk, while she struck out three for her second win of the weekend.

At the plate, Phillips (Stockbridge, Ga.) lined seven hits in 14 at bats in the four games. The junior transfer recorded two multi-hit games, including a 3-for-3 and two RBI first game against Sewanee. In Sunday's late game, Phillips' double to the left-center gap plated the Wildcats' first two runs of a game-deciding six-run at bat in the home fifth of a 6-3 win.

Due to wet a wet field in Fort Valley, FVSU travels on Wednesday, Feb. 12, for a twinbill at Georgia Southwestern starting at 2 p.m.
