Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Wildcats Lead Slips in Final Three Minutes to Tigers

SAVANNAH, Ga. – In a game with two evenly-matched teams, the Wildcats saw an unfortunate end to the contest. Leading by six points with 3:05, Fort Valley State saw a lid on the bucket and witnessed its lead slip away in those final moments to Savannah State men's basketball, 64-59 on Saturday afternoon.

A Shawn Foxbrennen jumper gave the Wildcats (6-20/4-13 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East) a two-possession lead at 59-53 with 3:05 remaining. FVSU misfired on its last five shots from the floor and committed a pair of turnovers allowed Savannah State (10-11/10-9 SIAC East) to net the final 11 points and come-from-behind victory.

K'Viontae Williams finished with a team-best 13 points on 6-for-13 shooting for FVSU to go with four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Foxbrennen was right behind with 12 points, nine boards, three assists and three steals. Malik Clark and Zachary Boggs combined to make 6-of-12 shots for seven tallies apiece.

Avery Joyner led all scorers with 23 points for the home Tigers.

The two foes were tied seven times in the first 15:25 of the contest. Savannah State held a 27-23 edge before Ebon Jay and D'Angelo Strickland laid in two buckets each to end the half for a FVSU 31-27 advantage.

The Tigers came out of the half strong to the tune of a 10-3 spurt and led 41-34 only 3:07 into the second 20 minutes.

Down 46-39 at 12:32, a Gregory Holloway three-point play started an 11-0 Wildcats run over a 5:32 time period for a 50-46 lead. Glenn Miller banked home a layup off a Foxbrennen pass for a seven-point lead, 57-50, at 4:37.

FVSU completes its final two regular season games at home next week. The Wildcats entertain the Panthers of Clark Atlanta on Tuesday night, Feb.25, in a 7:30 p.m. tip.
