FVSU Battles Back, But Benedict Backcourt Too Much

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Wildcats had short stretches of good play on Monday night, but they could not be sustained. Fort Valley State battled its way back, but Benedict College's backcourt was too much in an 85-67 home men's basketball victory.

A Shawn Foxbrennen 3-pointer made it a two-possession game and a layup two minutes later pulled the Wildcats (5-16/3-9 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East) to within four points, 54-50, with 13:12 remaining. The Tigers' (10-12/6-6 SIAC East) guards of Joseph Staton and Romello Jones, though, guided the home team to a 16-4 run with three more of their combined nine treys to end the visitors' comeback attempt.

Foxbrennen led the FVSU charge with 12 points to go with six rebounds and a pair of assists. Brenton Cliette Jordan was the other double figure scorer with 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting. K'Viontae Williams and Gregory Holloway added nine points apiece. Jacobi Coleman and Glenn Miller chipped in four tallies each.

Staton and Jones combined to go 9-of-21 from 3-point land for 44 points (24 and 20 points) to pace the Tigers. On the night, Benedict connected on 54 of its 70 shots from the floor.

Early on, the Wildcats tied the game 53 seconds in the matchup on a Cliette Jordan layup at 2-2. Two pairs of Andrew Ziegler free throws made it 8-6 and 10-8 with over 13 minutes in the first half, but the visitors made it back no closer.

The season series changes venues in both teams' next game on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 8, in a 3 p.m. tip in Fort Valley.
