FVSU Softball Splits Season Opener Against Trinity Baptist

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – On a bit of a damp and challenging opening-season conditions, Fort Valley State picked up a softball split against Trinity Baptist with a 10-6 win before it was edged 5-4 in the late contest.

The Wildcats' (1-1) Keteria Loney laced a 3-run triple to clear the bases in the home third of the first contest as the game-winning hit. FVSU led 3-2 after five frames of the late game only to see Trinity Baptist (1-1) plate three in the top of the sixth and hold on for the one-run win.

Newcomer Kayla Phillips and Ladayshia Williams both produced three hits for the day to lead FVSU at the plate. Shakerra Geter and Jahara Buggs each added two hits and combined for five runs.

Re'Nesha Goolsby picked up her first collegiate pitching victory in relief of game one. The sophomore went 5.1 inning where she allowed only one hit and one walk and struck out three.

FVSU continues its opening weekend with a Sunday doubleheader, Feb. 9, starting at 1 p.m. against Sewanee University.

Game 1
After the visitors plated four in their first at bat, FVSU answered with five of its own. Phillips singled and scored and then drove in the fifth run with the third bases loaded walk of the half inning for the 5-4 lead.

Along with Loney's 3-run trip in the fourth, the Wildcats saw Williams line a two-run single to score Tyana Askew and Alera Buie. Trinity Baptist scored two in the seven, but was four short of tying the game.

Game 2
Trailing 1-0, FVSU took advantage of a pair of visitors' errors to go in front 3-1. Off two extra-base hits, Trinity Baptist pushed in front, 5-3, in the top of the sixth with three scores.
