Phillips Pitching and Hitting Leads Wildcats to Pair of Wins and Series Win over Panthers

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – In her best showing upon coming to The Valley, Kayla Phillips led the Wildcats on Sunday afternoon. Fort Valley plated the game-winning run on an errant Clark Atlanta throw in the home seventh and then rode Phillips strong performance for a pair of 4-3 and 3-1 softball wins.

For a game which officially lasted 19 hours and 42 minutes, the Panthers (4-9/1-2 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East) tied the suspended game two (due to darkness on Saturday with FVSU leading 3-1 after six innings) in the top of the seventh with a two-out, two-run single. An Ashley Simmons-Blair two-out single to right field pushed Tamani Owens to third base, before Owens ran home on an errant outfield throw for the 4-3 win.

Tied at 1-1 in the home third of game three, Phillips lined a single up the middle, stole second and moved to third on the Panthers catcher throw into center field. Destiny Fitzpatrick followed with her own line drive up the middle for a 2-1 lead. Phillips followed a Keteria Loney, who singled home the first run in the first frame, lead-off double for a 3-1 score in the fifth inning. Phillips did not need any more runs as the junior transfer did not allow a Clark Atlanta hit over the final four innings.

Phillips (2-4) registered her first two Wildcats wins of the year. Kayla fired 14 innings where she allowed 11 hits, four earned runs, two walks and six strikeouts. Phillips also was 3-for-3 in the third contest with a double, the game-winning run, one RBI and a stolen base.

Simmons-Blair paced the FVSU hitters with a 4-for-8 two contests with one RBI and a run. Fitzpatrick and Tyana Askew accounted for three singles apiece. Loney added a double and single with a run and one RBI in game three. Shakerra Geter, Makayla Cruz and Alera Buie each legged out singles.

FVSU has three days off before it begins the SIAC Crossover three-day event in Jasper, Ala. The Wildcats begin with an 11 a.m. game against defending SIAC champ Spring Hill College and a 3:30 p.m. affair versus Miles College on Thursday, March 12.
