Wildcats Late-Comeback Attempt Falls Short, Argonauts Hold On For Win

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – For the first time in 623 days, Wildcats men's basketball took to the HPE Arena floor. Fort Valley State's late-comeback attempt fell short as West Florida held on for the 69-64 victory in the 2021-22 season opener.

Trailing by 15 points with 4:57, the Wildcats (0-1) pushed in the final couple minutes of action. A Tyler Pendergrass steal and dish to Jamarcus Scott for a dunk was followed by Pierre Mitchell's swipe and layup to cut the home deficit to 66-61 with 38 ticks left. The Argonauts (1-0) added three free throws in two trips to the line, before a Davon Cottle triple cut it to a 69-64 contest with four seconds. West Florida pulled in the final rebound off its missed foul shot to run out the clock and end the FVSU comeback try.

Mitchell led the way for the Wildcats with 18 points on 5 for 10 shooting, including two treys, and 6 of 7 free throws, while adding three assists and two steals. Cottle drained four 3-pointers and all three of his foul shots for 15 points, while K.J. Doucet was the other double figure scorer with 12 points and six rebounds.

For the visitors, Wendell Matthews and Dave Petit-Homme scored 18 and 17 points in the winning effort.

In the SIAC/GSC Challenge's first game, Clark Atlanta upset No. 10 Valdosta State, 112-106, in a high-scoring affair.
