Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Wildcats Push No. 10 Blazer to Limit, Fall Late

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – Looking like a completely different team than in the opener less than 24 hours ago, the Wildcats came to play on Saturday. Leading the entire first half, Fort Valley State pushed No. 10 Valdosta State to the limit, before it took a hard-fought men's basketball defeat, 69-61.

After back-to-back Davorian Rudolph buckets, FVSU (0-2) raced out to a 7-2 lead in the opening minutes and led for all, but 1:13 of the opening half. The game remained no more than a four-point game in the second half and the Wildcats had a 50-49 edge until the nationally-ranked Blazers went on a 11-1 spurt for a 60-51 advantage with 7:07 remaining. Ty'Reek Johnson pulled FVSU back to within four, 61-57, with 3:37 left, but it could get no closer in the final moments.

Behind 11 points in the first half, Rob Kendrick led the Wildcats' charge with 16 points, including a trio of 3-pointers and two steals. K.J. Doucet powered in all 12 of his points in the second half on 5 of 10 attempts, while Rudolph finished with 10 points on 5 of 8 tries and five rebounds. Pierre Mitchell added nine points, seven assists and five boards.

Michael Cole posted the game's lone double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds for Valdosta State top player.

FVSU will remain at home and face its third-straight Gulf South Conference foe with a Tuesday night, Nov. 16, contest against Shorter University. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
