Wildcats Cold Spell Allows Hawks to Take the Victory

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats hit a tough run at the wrong time on Tuesday night. Fort Valley State hit a six-minute cold spell and allowed Shorter University to take advantage and the victory, 73-59, in men's basketball action.

Ty'Reek Johnson laid in a put back for FVSU (0-3) to tie the contest, 50-50, with 9:17. The Hawks (2-1) went on a 14-0 run over the next 6:07 compliments of the Wildcats missing all six shot attempts from the field, failing to knock down all six free throws and committing three turnovers. Jamarcus Scott downed a 3-pointer with 52 seconds left to cut the margin to nine, but it was the lone highlight down the stretch in the tough final nine-plus minutes.

Johnson led the Wildcats with his first double-double of 13 points on 6 of 13 shooting and 12 rebounds. Scott added 11 points, while both K.J. Doucet and Davon Cottle chipped in 10 points apiece. Jamal Reynolds contributed four points, five rebounds and two assists off the bench.

Jay Shropshire led all scorers with 20 points for Shorter.

The Hawks controlled the early part of the night and held a nine-point advantage, 19-10, 9:15 into the contest. The Wildcats battled back with the next eight points in less than two minutes and went on to tie the game, 26-26, with 4:28 in the opening stanza. A Reynolds layup with 2:06 gave FVSU what would be its biggest lead of the night at 33-29 and it led 35-34 at intermission.

Shorter scored the first bucket of the second half and FVSU was only able to tie the game at 50-50 on Johnson's put back at 9:17.

FVSU next travels to the Lone Star State for a pair of games starting on Friday night, Nov. 19, at UT-Tyler. Tip will be 7 p.m.
