Patriots Solid Shooting Pushes Past Wildcats

TYLER, Texas – The Wildcats first trip to the Lone Star State turned out to be a tough opening contest. The University of Texas-Tyler made over half its shots in the 40 minutes and it helped push past Fort Valley State to an 84-60 men's basketball Friday evening victory.

With 15:32 left in the game, UT-Tyler (2-1) outscored FVSU (0-4), 17-5, in the next 7:36 and broke open the contest and doubled its advantage to 24 points, 65-41. The home Patriots hit 14 of 24 field goals in the second half (58.3%), which helped them pull away from the Wildcats down the stretch.

K.J. Doucet led FVSU with 13 points, while Pierre Mitchell added 10 points, five rebounds and a pair of assists. Ty'Reek Johnson, Jamarcus Scott, Joe Williams and Jamal Reynolds each chipped in six points.

Micah Fuller had top honors for UT-Tyler with 13 points. As a team, the Patriots made 29 of 56 attempts for the night for a 51.8% clip, including outrebounding the Wildcats, 42-32.

Down 3-0 early, Johnson banked in a layup and Mitchell hit a free throw to tie it, 3-3, 1:41 into the action. Doucet recorded a four-point play three minutes later to make a 10-9 score, which was the closest FVSU would be the rest of the evening. A Scott jump shot and a Mitchell layup pulled the Wildcats to within four, 19-15, and five points, 22-17, halfway through the opening 20 minutes. Leading 29-22, UT-Tyler scored seven points in a row and never led by less than 10 points for the final 26 minutes.

FVSU will complete its Texas weekend when it plays at Texas A&M Commerce Saturday afternoon in a 3 p.m. EST tip.
