Wildcats Lead Most of 1st Half, Lions Hold on in Final Minutes

COMMERCE, Texas – The Wildcats played its overall best game of the season on Saturday afternoon in the Lone Star State. Fort Valley State led most of the opening half, but Texas A&M-Commerce held on in final eight minutes for the 78-69 men's basketball win.

Trailing 23-19 halfway through the first period, the Wildcats (0-5) went on a 10-0 run over 4:17 time frame behind 3-pointers by both Pierre Mitchell and Jacobi Coleman to open a 29-23 lead at 5:23. The Lions (1-0) scored the final five first-half tallies and added five-straight with under eight minutes for a 10-point advantage and held off their Georgia visitors down the stretch.

K.J. Doucet was the big FVSU scorer with 9 of 11 field goals, including 4 of 5 from long-range, for a new season-best 22-point effort to go with three rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. Mitchell downed 5 of 9 of his tries and 6 of 7 from the foul line as the other double-digit player with 17 points and seven assists. All three of Jamarcus Scott, Coleman and Davon Cottle contributed five points each, while Jamal Reynolds chipped in five rebounds, four assists and two free throws.

As a team, FVSU connected on 26 of 53 shots for a season-high 49.1% percentage. The Wildcats also outrebounded the Lions, 33-31.

Texas A&M-Commerce's Jairus Roberon made 7 of 9 triples, including all five second-half shots, for a game-best 24 points.

After trailing at half 35-33, Doucet hit a jumper to make it 38-35 at 17:29. Following a Mitchell bucket, Reynolds made both free throws and FVSU was still right there at 41-39 with 16:10 remaining. Coming after a free throw on separate occasions by Mitchell and Scott, FVSU still held against the Texas host, 46-42 and 50-46.

Leading 53-48, the Lions netted the next five points for the first double-figure edge, 58-48. Another Doucet 3-pointer pulled FVSU to within seven, 65-58, with 4:19 on the clock. The Wildcats, though, could get no closer in the final couple minutes.

FVSU returns back to Georgia and will host Kentucky State in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opening next Saturday, Nov. 27. Tip will be at 3 p.m.
