Wildcats Down Two Storm Back, Outlasted in Fifth-Set Extra Points

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The young Wildcats progress is starting to be evident. Down two sets to start the night, Fort Valley State stormed back to take the next two sets only to see a fifth-set lead fade and Benedict College outlast for the hard-fought win, 3-2.

The home Tigers (15-5/8-2 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East) roared from the first serve and they went on for 25-9 and 25-20 early sets. The Wildcats (8-14/3-12 SIAC East) came back from the mid-match intermission on a mission to grab back-to-back 25-23 wins to force a fifth set. FVSU ran out to a 10-2 lead in the deciding set, but it could not close out four-match points as Benedict prevailed, 19-17.

The FVSU loss snapped its three-game win streak heading into Tuesday night, but it did show its progress. On Oct. 8 in Fort Valley, Benedict had its way with FVSU as it only allowed 51 total points with 23 of them coming in the third set of a 3-0 win.

Bianca Haslett sliced a season-best 18 kills to go with three digs and an ace. Laiani McCullough and Morgan Hebert posted double-doubles for their highlights.  McCullough downed 11 winners and dug 15 attacks, while Hebert had a season-high 49 assists, 13 digs and five kills.

Along the FVSU frontline, Naadira Jones hit .643 with 10 kills and only one error in 14 attacks. Raven Edwards and Syraih Wint contributed seven kills apiece, while Elizabeth Moore dug 13 Tigers attack to go with three assists and three aces.

Down 17-21 in the third set, FVSU rattled off three points in a row and five of the next six for a 22-22 follow Haslett and Jones kills. Trailing 23-22, another Jones kills, a Moore ace and a home attack error kept the night alive with a 25-23 Wildcats win.

In set four, the Tigers went out to an 8-2 lead only to have the Wildcats come back with their own 8-2 spurt for a 10-10 deadlock. Behind 23-22, FVSU took advantage of two Benedict attack errors and a McCullough kill for a second 25-23 win and force a fifth set.

The Wildcats stayed hot for a 5-1 lead and then 10-2. The Tigers, though, had one more run in them and cut the margin to 13-8 and eventually 13-12. A Wint kill gave FVSU its first of what would be four match points, but Benedict answered. With FVSU ahead 17-16, Benedict netted the final three tallies and 19-17 win.

FVSU will now be off until it makes up its match versus Savannah State on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 7, in a 2 p.m. first serve.
