MACON, Ga. –
It was a Wildcats return to the men's basketball court 610 days in the making. After the program did not compete last season, the new-look Fort Valley State team battled Mercer University in a Wednesday night exhibition, but it came up short, 93-61.

After Pierre Mitchell dropped the game's opening shot from the left corner, the FVSU lead would be short lived. Mercer answered with 14 of the next 16 points for the early 14-4 lead only 5:12 into the contest. The Wildcats cut the margin under double digits to eight points on four occasions in the next five minutes with the last coming on a Davon Cottle triple, 25-17, at the 8:57 mark, but they could get no closer the rest of the way.

Leading the young roster, freshman K.J. Doucet dropped 4 of 6 attempts from the floor for 12 points. Davorian Rudolph and Ty'Reek Johnson both added 10 points apiece, with Rudolph pulling down four rebounds and Johnson with a trio of assists. Pierre Mitchell and Rob Kendrick chipped in seven and six points.

Neftali Alvarez guided the Bears with 19 points on 8 for 10 from the field, while Shannon Grant added 17 points.

FVSU will have the next nine days off until it hosts the SIAC/GSC Challenge on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 12-13. The Wildcats open the two-day event against the Argonauts of West Florida in a 7 p.m. tip-off.
