Lane Hangs on Against FVSU Men’s Basketball

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Wildcats, again, found success in the early part of the game, but they ran out of time to pull out the victory. Lane College hung on for the 66-62 win over Fort Valley State in men's basketball Saturday.

With 1:21 left trailing by seven, the Wildcats (1-9/1-2 SIAC East) received a jumper from K.J. Doucet at 44 seconds and Pierre Mitchell downed a 3-pointer six ticks later after a Dragons (5-3/1-0 SIAC West) turnover for a 64-62 score. After a timeout, Lane sealed the contest with six seconds to go with a bucket.

Doucet connected on 7 of 13 field goals for a team-high 19 points and six rebounds for FVSU. Mitchell added eight points and five assists, while Jamal Reynolds chipped in eight points and eight rebounds. Jacobi Coleman had eight points of his own.

Justin Sylver recorded a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead Lane.

After the opening bucket of the day by Lane, FVSU rattled off the next 11 points in 3:41 to go ahead, 11-2, behind two Coleman baskets. The Wildcats regained the lead of eight points, 24-16, at 7:01 following an 8-0 spurt. The Dragons rallied back and was able to tie the game at 30 heading to half.

The Wildcats would enjoy one brief second-half lead when Doucet drained a trey 1:18 into the second 20 minutes for a 33-30 margin. At 10:40 left, a Jamarcus Scott 3-pointer pulled FVSU within a single point, 45-44. Lane, though, put up the next nine consecutive tallies and never gave up the advantage despite the charging FVSU last minutes effort.

FVSU returns home for two home games next week starting on Thursday night, Dec. 16, when Spring Hill comes to The Valley in a 7:30 p.m. start.
