Panthers Edge Wildcats Down the Stretch

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats saw a winning start to 2022 slip away in the final Saturday minutes. After leading by 10 points in the opening five minutes of the second half, Fort Valley State saw its lead slip away until Clark Atlanta pushed ahead in the last five minutes for the 79-74 close men's basketball victory.

Following an opening half of taking turns with runs, the Wildcats (1-10/1-3 SIAC East) started the second 20 minutes on a 10-1 run in the first 3:11 for a 41-31 lead capped by three-straight Ty'Reek Johnson buckets. The Panthers (5-6/3-3 SIAC East) answered and whittled the margin down away for a 45-45 tie five minutes later. The game remained a one-possession game until five-straight points on a Clark Atlanta 3-pointer and a jump shot for a 76-69 advantage with 2:01 left. The home team was unable to get closer than three points in the final two minutes.

Five FVSU players posted double figures with Pierre Mitchell leading with 14 points, including a pair of treys, and three assists. Davorian Rudolph added 12 points and seven rebounds, while both Davon Cottle and K.J. Doucet chipped in 11 points. Johnson finished with 10.
