MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Wildcats' tough close-game endings turned in their favor Monday night. Davon Cottle's baseline jumper with 4.9 seconds left gave Fort Valley State a men's basketball road victory over LeMoyne-Owen, 70-69.

Trailing 63-56 with 5:19 left, Pierre Mitchell downed back-to-back 3-pointers in the next two minutes to pull the Wildcats (2-10/2-3 SIAC East) to within a point, 63-62. At 59 seconds, K.J. Doucet made a game-tying driving layup for a 68-68 score. The Magicians (7-5/3-4 SIAC West) made 1 of 2 free throws with 39 seconds to hold a 69-68 edge. After a timeout with 14 seconds, Mitchell drove into the middle of the lane and dished to the right baseline where Cottle dropped the go-ahead bucket, 70-69, with 4.9 seconds. The home team was unable to get a final shot off.

Mitchell led the winning Wildcats with 14 points on 5 of 8 shooting, including making both of his 3-point attempts in the final moments, to go with three assists. Doucet connected on 6 of 12 shooting for 12 points, while Cottle added 12 points of his own on 4 of 7 tries. Ty'Reek Johnson chipped in 10 points and six rebounds, while Jamal Reynolds had nine points and four assists.

Micah Evans had top honors for LeMoyne-Owen of 14 points.

FVSU continues on its two-game road trip with a Wednesday night, Jan. 12, contest at Miles College starting at 8:30 p.m. EST.
