Fitzpatrick and Hasan Hits Propel FVSU to Softball Split Against Trinity Baptist

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – Missing the key hit all day, the Wildcats waited until extra innings to find it Friday afternoon. Destiny Fitzpatrick's lead-off double followed by Rasheedah Hasan lining a single to right field gave Fort Valley State the lone run in a 1-0 eight-inning game two against Trinity Baptist. The visiting Eagles plated the lone two runs of the opener, 2-0, for the split.

After leaving 10 runners on base in the first seven trips to the plate, the two Wildcats freshmen hitters didn't let another opportunity go to waste. Fitzpatrick belted a double to left-centerfield where it was misplayed in the outfield allowing her to slide into third. Hasan worked the count until she lofted a single to right field and saw pinch-runner Makayla Cruz race home with the FVSU (5-3) winning score.

The Eagles (3-16) received a fourth-frame, run-scoring ground out and added an insurance run in the top of the sixth off a Lena Springer triple for the 2-0 difference. TBC's pitcher Lana Fletcher held the FVSU hitters to only three singles.

On the day, Fitzpatrick, Hasan and Ja'Necia Barber combined for six of the home team's nine hits, two apiece. Keteria Loney, Ladayshia Williams and Tailor Gillyard accounted for the other singles.

The two Wildcats pitchers of Kayla Phillips and Caprice Johnson allowed only two earned runs and 12 hits over 15 innings of work. Both pitchers has identical six hits allowed, two strikeouts and two walks.

FVSU will have a week off from the diamond until it hosts Savannah State in a four-game series next Friday and Saturday, March 26 and 27.
