Wildcats Comeback Falls Short in Opener Against Tigers

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – If the reversal of fortunes had started sooner, the Wildcats would have claimed the first contest. Fort Valley State tried to rally from a seven-run deficit, but feel short, 7-4, in Saturday's opening game against Savannah State.
 
Down 7-0 in the home sixth, Ladayshia Williams lined a run-scoring single up the middle and Ryleigh Murray drew a bases-loaded walk to put FVSU (5-4) on the scoreboard, 7-2. In the last trip to the plate, Janecia Barber saw Destiny Fitzpatrick score on a fielder's choice and Williams had a second RBI single to cut the margin to 7-4, but the final Wildcats batter was retired with the bases loaded.
 
FVSU held a 1-0 lead in the top of the third of Game 2 when rain hit Fort Valley and cause suspension of the contest. The two teams will pick up at that point on Sunday morning at 9 a.m., before they hope to play the third and fourth games of the weekend series.
 
Williams led the home team with a 3-for-4 game with two RBI. Kayla Phillips and Jahara Buggs both singled twice. Fitzpatrick, Keteria Loney and Rasheedah Hassan accounted for the other three of the 10 hits.
 
In the circle, Caprice Johnson logged five innings of five-hit and no run relief.

The Tigers plated multiple runs in the first three frames with three, two, and two to open the  7-0 lead.
