Wildcats Run-Rule Tigers For Sunday Softball Split

3/28/2021 4:49:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FORT VALLEY, Ga. – With a sudden deluge of rain suspending play in the middle of Game 2 Saturday, the Wildcats recorded a long Sunday on the diamond for some scoring success. Fort Valley State exploded for 13 in its first two at bats for a 13-5, five-inning run rule of Game 3, but Savannah State claimed the rest of Game 2, 3-1, for the Sunday split.

After falling behind by three runs in the top of the first, the Wildcats (6-5) exploded for seven runs on six hits in the home first and added another six scores in the second frame for a 13-3 advantage. The Tigers (5-2) pushed home a pair in the visiting fifth, but it was not enough to prevent the eight-run rule final of 13-5.

Trailing 1-0 in the third when play was suspended in Game 2 on Saturday, Savannah State tied the game right away upon the game being restarted and took the lead with two runs in the fifth and eventual 3-1 victory.

On the day, FVSU recorded 16 hits in the 11 trips to the plate. Kayla Phillips and Alera Buie both accounted for three hits and one run apiece and four combined RBI to lead the home effort.

Ladayshia Williams drove in three FVSU runners of her own and scored twice with one single. Ja'Necia Barber and Keteria Loney contributed two singles apiece.

Caprice Johnson won her fourth decision of five decisions on the year.

Game 3
Williams drew a lead-off walk and Tamani Owens and Phillips singled to load the bases in the home first. Loney plated the first runner with a single only to have Destiny Fitzpatrick draw a RBI walk for a 3-2 score. After one out, Rasheedah Hasan singled past the pitcher to tie the game, 3-3, before Buie and Williams would have back-to-back two-run hits as part of the seven-run first at bat.

FVSU travels to the Chattanooga, Tenn., area for Tuesday and Wednesday, March 30-31, doubleheaders at Sewanee University. Tuesday's twinbill has a 2 p.m. first pitch.
