Wildcats Pound Ball in Opener, but Tigers Score Unearned Runs Late for Split

SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Wildcats' bats were alive on Tuesday afternoon. Fort Valley State pounded 27 hits and claimed a 13-3 opening victory, but host Sewanee University plated two unearned runs in the home seventh for the split, 8-7.
 
FVSU (7-6) pushed home five runs in both the fourth and seventh innings of game one with Ja'Necia Barber driving in three and Tamani Owens line four hits with a double in the outburst. In the late contest, the Wildcats edged ahead, 7-6, with three runs in the top of the seventh only to see the Tigers take advantage of miscues for the game-winning pair of unearned scores.
 
On the day, Owens had the hot FVSU bat with a 6-for-9 twinbill with four runs and a pair of doubles. Barber drove in six teammates as part of her 4-for-9 afternoon with two runs and two doubles.
 
Three other Wildcats produced four hits apiece in Keteria Loney, Kayla Phillips, and Destiny Fitzpatrick. Loney drove in 4 runners and scored four times, while Phillips cross the plate three occasions. Ladayshia Williams added a double and a single and Rasheedah Hasan singled two times.
 
Caprice Johnson picked up the win going six innings with two strikeouts.
 
Game 1
Trailing 3-2 in the top of the fourth, Tailor Gillyard, Phillips and Owens were hit by a pitch, reached on an erro and singled to load the bases. Barber laced a three-run double and ran home on a Loney single. Hasan singled home Loney two batters later for a 7-3 lead.
 
FVSU added a single Makayla Cruz RBI in the sixth and five more scores in the seventh with Loney and Fitzpatrick RBI hits to cap the 13-3 win.
 
Game 2
The Wildcats pounced in the visiting first with three-straight hits from Phillips, Owens, a double, and Barber and all scored for a 3-0 lead.
 
Sewanee used a two-run fourth and four-score sixth to pull ahead, 6-4. Barber drove in a pair with a triple in the seventh and Loney helped FVSU take the lead, 7-6, on a sac fly to right.

The Tigers started the seventh by reaching on an error, before two outs. The home team regained the advantage and win with two unearned runs and 8-7 final.
 
The two teams return to the field on Wednesday for another twinbill starting at 1 p.m. EST.
