FVSU Softball Splits Pair of One-Run Contests at Benedict

COLUMBIA, S.C. – On a nice Sunday afternoon, the Wildcats had two tight contests. Fort Valley State's Kayla Phillips doubled home the game-winner in the seventh inning of game one, 7-6, while Benedict College plated the final score of the seventh of the late game on an error, 4-3.

After the Tigers (8-4) tied the game in the home sixth, Tamani Owens lined a lead-off single in the seventh, moved to second on an error and raced home on the Phillips double, before the Wildcats (8-9) shut the door in the bottom part of the frame.

FVSU scored once in the first and twice in the fourth of game two and held a 3-2 advantage. Benedict tied the game with a single tally in the sixth before back-to-back visitors errors allowed the winning run to touch home.

Both Phillips and Owens accounted for three hits apiece of the Wildcats' 13 on the day. Phillips had two doubles and a single with four RBI. Owens had all singles and scored four of the team's 10 runs.

Ja'Necia Barber went 2-for-4 in the open with FVSU's first home run of the spring, a two-run shot, and two runs. Keteria Loney singled and scored in each game, while Jahara Buggs and Rasheedah Hasan each had one hit.

FVSU returns to action on Tuesday afternoon, April 13, in a twinbill at Trinity Baptist. The two games begin at 1 p.m. in Jacksonville, Fla.
