Wildcats Score Early in Both Games, Register Late Shutout to Sweep Golden Rams

ALBANY, Ga. – The Wildcats could not have ended the regular season better on the diamond on Sunday afternoon. Fort Valley State scored six runs in each of the early innings and registered a late-game shutout to sweep Albany State, 8-4 and 7-0, in softball.

After a scoreless first at bat, Destiny Fitzpatrick led off each of the next trips frames with hits and Jahara Buggs followed her with hits of her own as part of identical three-run innings and never trailed. Keteria Loney laced a two-run double in the top of the first as part of a five-run outburst and Kayla Phillips fired an eight-hitter in the circle to complete the FVSU (12-7) sweep if ASU (4-14).

In their final games, senior Ladayshia Williams and Loney each posted outstanding days. Williams went 4-for-5 with two RBI in the opener and added two more runs after walks late. Following one single in the first contest, Loney drove in the first two second-game runs with a double, added a single, walked twice and scored a run.

Buggs put together top back-to-back top games at the plate with a 5-for-9 day. The right fielder lined three singles, scored two runs and drove in a pair in game one, before she laced a triple and single with two more runs, one RBI and a stolen base.

Fitzpatrick contributed a double, two singles and two runs, while Ja'Necia Barber, Tamani Owens and Rasheedah Hasan each recorded two hits.

Along with going 3-for-8 with two doubles at the plate, Phillips scattered eight hits over seven innings where she fanned three without a walk in the second contest shutout.

Caprice Johnson won her seventh win in nine decisions by going the distance in game one.
