Wildcats Seek First Victory Over Rattlers in Recent Decades

9/10/2021 1:46:00 PM

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The table is set for growth. The 2021 Wildcats can show its mettle against arguably its toughest foe of the season this weekend. Fort Valley State travels to Tallahassee in search of its first gridiron victory over Florida A&M.

The Wildcats and Rattlers take to the Bragg Memorial Stadium field for the third time in four years on Saturday evening for a 6 p.m. kick-off.

Wildcats Aim to Even Series, Take First Game Since 1984
In what has not been a successful endeavor in recent meetings, FVSU looks to even its series with Florida A&M in the 23rd time the two foes will play on the gridiron since 1951.
The Rattlers have captured the last three meetings over the previous 10 years. FAMU scored the first 47 points on the way to a 57-20 route in the last game on Sept. 14, 2019. The two opponents had a similar outcome the previous year in a 41-7 Rattlers victory on Sept. 1, 2018.
The Wildcats lost on a late fourth-quarter Rattlers score in the 2011 contest in a 28-22 final. FVSU last pulled out the win, 19-14, in the 1984 season opener.
FAMU holds the 11-10-1 edge in the series.

Flowers Seeks to Continue Perfect Success
After opening his head coaching career with a pair of spring victories, Maurice Flowers will try to stay perfect as the director of the FVSU football program. Flowers added a third win in his first shutout over Tuskegee University, 30-0, last Sunday night in the Inaugural Red Tails Classic in Montgomery, Ala.
With the opening victory, Flowers ran his early head coaching record to 3-0.
For the second season in a row, Flowers was able to win the season opener and looks to continue his success run and post his fourth win in as many games Saturday night with his first trip into Tallahassee.

Wildcats Try for Second 2-0 Start in a Row
FVSU will try for a second 2-0 start to its season in a row on Saturday. With victories over Shorter and Erksine in the late spring, FVSU posted its first 2-0 start to a season in 13 years. Prior to the spring, the Wildcats had not started a season with wins in their first two games since 2007 (wins over Clark Atlanta and Morehouse).

Moore and Jackson Garner SIAC Players of the Week Awards
After their performances in the Inaugural Red Tails Classic last Sunday night with a shutout of Tuskegee, 30-0, defensive back Tyler Moore and quarterback Tyrell Jackson were two of top performers and garnered the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Football Defensive and Offensive Player of the Week awards.
Moore paced the FVSU (1-0) defense with seven tackles, a tackle for loss, one sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery was his general statistical line. Jackson passed for 166 yards and two touchdowns on 17 of 34 attempts and added 26 rushing yards on five carries.
A junior from Ashburn, Ga., Moore's impact goes beyond his stat line. After a FVSU fumble on the opening drive, the defensive back teamed with Deon Andrews for a 4th-and-goal line stand inside the one-yard line to set the defensive tone of the night. Moore added an early second-quarter fumble recovery, before he blitzed off the corner in the third quarter, hit the Tuskegee quarterback causing a fumble, which teammate Zach Anderson scooped and ran 60 yards for a touchdown to make it a 27-0 contest.
After a 6-0 lead at halftime, Jackson took advantage of back-to-back Wildcats forced turnovers to start the third frame with touchdown passes of six yards to Jhi-Marre Brown and five yards to Shemar Bridges.

Wildcats Open Home Schedule in Week 3
Following two opening road contests, FVSU will open its four-game home schedule in Week 3. The Wildcats will host the Dragons of Lane College on Saturday, Sept. 18, starting at 2 p.m. With the new field turf at Wildcat Stadium projected to not be finished in time for the contest, the location of the game will be announced early next week.
